Michael's Volunteering Journey

I started volunteering with Hope Into Action in October 2022 after a conversation with Mark Oldaker. I had recently retired and was looking for something to keep my mind active. I’ve known Mark for a number of years and we both attend Emmanuel Church in Werrington

I spent more than half my working life in the charity sector holding various senior finance posts and agreed with Mark that I would come for a day a week until Christmas 2022 and then review – and I’m still here!

As well as routine finance tasks. I’ve been involved in a number of “projects” over my time at HIA, from reviewing and changing insurance brokers, collating the Gift Aid claims and recently helping with the migration of the tenant accounts over to the new Empower system.

I have worked for a number of organisations that claim to have a “family vibe” but at HIA this is really tangible, starting the day with corporate prayers and I always feel included in whatever is going on.

I have learnt over the years that no two days are the same when you work in finance which is why I keep coming back for more.
